PALM SUNDAY 2020 SERMON

Gathered in love

vigil

In response to conversation in the Sault, both online and in person, Rev. Pamela and Rev. Patrick discerned there was a deep desire to gather in respect and solidarity with our city’s Muslim community to mourn and to fight against Islamaphobia, after the tragic shooting of six men during worship in a Quebec City mosque on Sunday night.

With input and guidance from friends in the Sault, the call to gather for a Candlelight Vigil for Peace was put out late on Tuesday, February 1, 2017.  On Wednesday evening, in spite of the bitter cold wind, about 200 people stood in solidarity in front of the courthouse.  Candles were lit, messages of hope and solidarity were heard.  Friendships were made.

We thank all those who spoke and shared words of encouragement.  We thank all those who came and all those who were unable to attend, but relayed their support online.

We give special thanks for Imam Saber Alklilani of the Islamic Association of Sault-St-Marie who shared words with those gathered and expressed gratitude for the show of support.

You can read more about the vigil from the coverage by Kenneth Armstrong of SooToday.

We call the people of Sault Ste. Marie to gather as neigbours united in the hope of peace. Our hearts are broken over the tragic loss of six men killed in a Quebec City mosque on Sunday night. We stand in solidarity with our city’s Muslim community to mourn and to fight against Islamaphobia.

We will gather at 7pm on Wed. Feb. 1st in front of the Sault Ste. Marie Courthouse on 426 Queen St. E. to light candles and keep vigil. All are welcome. Candles will be provided.
